What is Dogecoin (DOGE)?

Dogecoin was released in 2013 as a project to poke fun at the very technical crypto scene back then. The two founders felt that crypto insiders were taking themselves too seriously, and scaring non-technical people away. To get everyone else interested, they created a coin themed like a Shiba Inu dog, hoping to break down some of those barriers. Dogecoin itself was simply created as a clone of LiteCoin with little extra development effort at first. But thanks to its roots, transactions are faster and cheaper than Bitcoin, but still slow by modern standards.

Our take on Dogecoin

Dogecoin is a great example of a "meme coin" - a coin that doesn't have a lot of real world use but has seen spikes in value merely due to hype. Despite of what Elon Musk tweets, we think it has mostly historic value, and don't find the technology appealing as a solution to replace traditional financial systems. There are now hundreds of alternatives that have better functionality. Regardless, we really like its community: Warm and welcoming to anyone, especially beginners.

While it holds a special place in the crypto community for being the first memecoin, Dogecoin seems to be mostly the toy of Elon Musk, with much of its price action revolving around whether or not Musk-affiliated companies will accept $DOGE as payment. As soon as the Doge community works to create more of an ecosystem (cough, cough like Shiba Inu's), I'll be bullish. Until then, not so much.
